Christmas Gift Ideas for Coffee Lovers

Wondering what to give your friends and family during this Christmas season? If they happen to like or drink coffee, then you are on the right page (I hope so). In this blog, I will share with you some ideas for your gift inspiration:
1. V60 set + Colombia Pink Bourbon
V60 is a cone-shaped manual brewer by one of the most famous coffee equipment companies, Hario. Its design is optimal for a very clear and clean cup of coffee. The brewer can bring out the good flavour and quality from the origins and the roasts and truly highlight your coffee’s acidity and freshness. This brewer is fun and challenging to play with since it's easy to use but takes time to fine-tune your techniques. This makes the V60 an excellent gift for coffee lovers at any level. It’s simple, and beautiful, especially for people who like their homes to be of modern or minimal style. Check out the V60 options at our stores and web store.
Additionally, your gift receivers would love to try it with a coffee that is suitable for the set. In this case, try a light-roasted coffee with fruity and floral notes to get the best out of the beans. Check out our newest specialty coffee selection for this Christmas: Colombia Pink Bourbon or MokkaMestarit’s QC team’s favourite: Ethiopia Aricha.
Here is my go-to recipe when brewing with V60. It is called the “4:6 method” by Tetsu Kasuya (World Brewers Cup Champion 2016). This is a summary of how the recipe goes:
- Coffee: 33g
- Grind: 8/10 (1=very fine, 10=very coarse)
- Water: 500g (divided into 5 pours)
- Pour 100g of water into the ground coffee, and swirl to make sure all coffee gets contact with water.
- Wait for the water to drain before starting the next pour.
- Repeat 4 times and enjoy!
2. Aeropress + Ethiopia Suke Quto
A versatile coffee brewer for people who wants to be creative with different recipes and usually brew for themselves. Aeropress is made of plastic so it is super durable and super compact. Suitable for travelling, office brewing, or even on a plane (I’m not kidding). This brewer can make strong and delicious coffee anywhere provided you have hot water and good coffee. Check out the Aeropress in our online store.
To pair with this brewer, Try our Guatemala Mercedes 2/5 or Ethiopia Suke Quto 4/5.
Here is Niina’s Aeropress recipe for the Finnish Aeropress Championship:
- Coffee: 17g
- Grind: 6/10 (1=very fine, 10=very coarse)
- Water: 125g @ 85°C
- Brewer position: Inverted
- Filter: 2 x Paper (Rinsed)
- Pour 125g of water on the 17g of coffee in 10-15 seconds.
- Stir firmly a few times.
- Put the filter cap with rinsed filters on the AeroPress. (If needed, gently press out excess air)
- At 1:30 minutes, flip the AeroPress onto a carafe and press out all coffee in 40 seconds.
- Add 65g of water to the extracted coffee. Taste and add water if needed.
- Cool the brew down to roughly 60°C (by stirring and decanting)
At the competition, Niina used Villivesi’s spring water.
3. Chemex + Organic Christmas Coffee Blend
It’s an iconic and beautiful piece of equipment as well as decoration! Plus, it can make the most coffee in one go (compared to the other 2 brewers). This is probably the most well-known brewer of the 3 throughout the history of coffee. It is made of only one piece of glass. Therefore, it is very convenient as a combination of a dripper and a carafe. Chemex uses a thicker paper filter, so your cup is cleaner and many people love Chemex for that feature. And above all, coffee looks gorgeously delicious in this brewer due to its unique and aesthetic design.
Additionally, for those of you who like multi-purpose items like me, this is a really fine water tank, or even better, you can use it as a wine decanter (super easy to swirl and clean).
My recommendation for coffees to go with Chemex are Christmas Organic Coffee 3/5, Peru 4/5 or Indonesia Kokowagayo 3/5
The recipe I suggest is also the 4:6 method, just with a higher dose and coarser grind size:
- Coffee: 60g
- Grind: 9/10 (1=very fine, 10=very coarse)
- Water: 900g (divided into 5 pours)
- Rinse the Chemex paper filter before brewing is a must. Its thicker filter tends to carry some noticeable paper taste to your cup.
- Pour 180g of water into the ground coffee, and swirl to make sure everything is submerged.
- Wait for the water to drain before starting the next pour.
- (Only for the first pour): You can wait up to 1 minute for the coffee to “breathe” before starting the next pour.
- Repeat 4 times and enjoy!
Extra Idea #1: Hand Grinder
Coffee always tastes better when freshly ground. This hand grinder from Hario is a great starting point for people who just begin their coffee journey. The grind size can be adjusted according to what brewing method you need. I highly recommend this piece of equipment if the purpose of your gift is for the receiver to make better coffee with their current brewing methods.
Extra Idea #2: Gift Cards
In case you are still wondering what to choose from, a gift card can be your stress reliever. Visit our store in the centre of Tampere or our roastery shop to get gift cards. You can also get our online gift card (only applicable to the web store).
