Mastering the Art of Brewing Exceptional Coffee at Home

15.9.2023

Ah, coffee! The magical elixir that fuels early morning commutes, and keeps us well-functioned during the day. When it comes to brewing, it is fairly simple: just add hot water to the brown powder, wait, and there you have it: coffee! But we all know there are more nuances than that, especially for you who enjoy home coffee. To unlock the true potential of your coffee beans, it's essential to adopt a few key practices that ensure a delightful aroma and a flavorful cup. Today, I'll equip you with seven tips to elevate your coffee game.

1. Embrace Freshly Ground Coffee:

If you use pre-ground coffee, try the same type but grind it right before brewing, your cup quality will change significantly. The cornerstone of a remarkable coffee experience lies in the freshness of your ingredient. Pre-ground coffee loses its essence after a couple of days and it often falls victim to producing stale and rancid flavors. On the other hand, By grinding your beans fresh, you crack open the box of aromas and tastes just before brewing, revealing the true sensation of coffee enjoyment. Even if you only want the caffeine to stay awake, the smell of fresh coffee already makes you excited before taking the first sip, so why not give it a try?

2. Pick Your Grind Size:

Now that you buy my idea of grinding fresh (hopefully) using the beans that you are familiar with, we can take one step further. The journey towards a perfectly balanced cup of coffee begins with choosing the correct grind size. Grinding too fine and it leads to over-extraction, resulting in a bitter brew, while grinding too coarse leads to under-extraction, leaving you with a sour taste. Finding the sweet spot of the appropriate grind size allows for optimal extraction, delivering harmonious and delightful cups of coffee. Choosing the correct grind size depends on your desired brewing method. There is no concrete and exact size for anything, but it is more like a range (more on this in a future blog), but basically, you can follow the scale here (1=very fine, 13=very coarse):

3. Invest in Quality Coffee:

Coffee is the main ingredient of your coffee, obviously, therefore it is crucial to prepare yourself with the best possible beans for the best possible result. This may require a higher investment, but the outcome will be totally worth it. When you can, opt for beans sourced from local and reputable roasteries that prioritize higher-quality green coffee. Their understanding and dedication to quality translate into meticulously roasted coffee beans that elevate your brewing experience. Higher quality coffee means the green beans are treated with more careful procedures from the farm to your cup, not to mention the producers get more compensations for their hard work, if that aspect matters to you. Think of it as using premium ingredients for your meals, where superior quality yields exceptional results.

4. Precision with Scale and Timer:

Now we may get a little extra, but trust me it is not that difficult. Precision is the key to consistency and repeatability in brewing. Utilize a digital scale to measure the precise amount of coffee and water you use. A kitchen scale will do just fine. This knowledge allows you to fine-tune your brewing process, making adjustments as needed. When you measure, you know what works well and what doesn’t, so that tomorrow you can change or repeat. Otherwise, you don’t really know how much coffee and water you use, which may result in one day the coffee tastes on point and the next day it is way off.

It's equally important to use a timer to keep track of your brew time. While it may seem like an extra step, this ensures that you know how long the coffee has been brewing, helping you avoid under or over extraction. For immersion coffee methods like French press, you can multitask while waiting for the timer to go off after 4 minutes, instead of having to regularly check the clock or guess when 4 minutes have passed. For percolation coffee methods like pour-over, timing can help you determine whether your grind size is too fine or too coarse.

5. Mastering Water Temperature:

Similar to tea, water temperature plays a crucial role in coffee extraction. Lighter roasts require hotter water due to their denser structure, which makes it harder to extract the good stuff. In contrast, darker roasts are more porous and brittle, making them easier to extract. Adjust your water temperature accordingly, using boiling water for light roasts and slightly cooler water (around 85-90°C) for dark roasts, to avoid over-extraction and bitterness. However, this difference has a greater impact on percolation methods (V60, Chemex) than on immersion methods (French press, pot/pannu coffee)

6. Optimize Your Brewing Equipment:

To unlock the true potential of your brewing equipment, there are a few simple yet vital practices to follow. When using paper filters, remember to rinse them to prevent any potential papery taste from seeping into your cup. Although you may be reading a book while enjoying your coffee, you surely don't want your coffee to taste like your book. When choosing a brewer, I personally prefer a plastic dripper as it requires less pre-heating and is easier to travel with without fear of breakage.

For moka pot, using hot water instead of cold before putting it on the stove makes it less prone to over-extraction because the coffee also starts the extraction process as the water gets hotter. When storing, make sure to screw the parts loosely to prevent damage to the rubber gasket, as this can impact the brewing pressure, and you don’t have to change it as often if you store it correctly.

7. The Power of Cleanliness:

Last but definitely not least, just as you wouldn't cook in a dirty pan, maintaining clean brewing equipment is paramount for exceptional coffee, and perhaps for your health too. Regularly clean your equipment to prevent the accumulation of old and rancid coffee flavors because coffee oil can build up over time. A clean brewing setup ensures you a fresh and delicious cup with every brew.

By following these tips, you can elevate your home brewing to new heights and savor the rich aromas and flavors of exceptional coffee. Embrace the freshness of grinding your beans, select the optimal grind size, invest in high-quality coffee when you can, and take advantage of consistent brewing. Pay attention to water temperature, cleanliness, and take care of your brewing equipment. With these practices in your repertoire, your daily coffee ritual will become a truly enjoyable and satisfying experience. Cheers to the art of brewing exceptional coffee at home!
